Milan & Lake Como

I had the unique opportunity to return to Italy with my husband; I had once studied in Florence as a painting major, and to be able to go back to Italy and visit Milan was unexpected and truly a dream come true. Since this was a work trip for my husband and I was his tag-a-long, it was just me, my camera and wherever I decided the map would take me for the day. I spent two days footing it through Milan, finding my way through Parco Sempione and then stumbling upon the Sforza Castle at sunset. I also strolled the streets of the Fashion District, shopped in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, and of course, visited the Duomo. (I remember as an Art History student, we always called it “Milan’s Drip Castle”… and once standing in front of its Gothic spires you can see why.) A huge highlight of the trip was dinner at Antico Ristorante Boeuce. It just so happened to be truffle season, and I couldn’t resist the splurge. It may have been the most exquisite flavor I have ever experienced, and something I will not soon forget.

The third day I decided to hop on the train and take the short hour ride to Lake Como (stopping off at Nord Lago). I went with the mindset of a true explorer, no intention of sight-seeing, but somehow and thankfully I stumbled upon beautiful Villa Olmo. I then hoofed it quite a few miles to the neighboring town of Cernobbio where I stopped at cafes, ate gelato and drank cappuccino by the water. On my way back to catch the last train back, I paused at Aero Club Como to watch planes land directly on the water with the locals. In fact, the best part about visiting in November was that I felt like I was the only tourist there. And I think that’s the real magic of a city: when you can witness the beauty of the day-to-day life there… and somehow feel like you fit right in.
